ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday said Pakistan will continue to steadfastly support the total withdrawal of Israel from the occupied Arab territories. We support the full realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people including the establishment of an independent State, with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital. We demand that the illegal Israeli settlements and construction activities in the West Bank and atrocities and repression must come to an end, forthwith", Gilani said while speaking at a banquet he hosted in honour of President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine here at the PM House. Besides the members of Palestinian delegation, the banquet was attended by a large number of federal ministers, parliamentarians, diplomats and senior officials. The Prime Minister said Pakistan will also continue to play its due role at the United Nations in supporting the legitimate demands of people under occupation including the people of Palestine. "To all Pakistanis and people striving for the right to self-determination the peaceful struggle of the Palestinian people is inspirational. We are confident that the Palestinian people will achieve full Statehood through their legitimate and peaceful struggle, he added. The Prime Minister said the Palestinian struggle for statehood and for the right to self determination finds resonance in Pakistan, adding, Our brothers in Kashmir face a similar occupation and are also struggling to realize their right to self-determination. He recalled that Pakistan hosted the 1974 OIC Summit under the direction of our Leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Shaheed. That Summit was aimed at developing collective wisdom on issues concerning the Muslim World particularly on the Palestine issue and to establish linkages with the international community to resolve them in the interest of peace, security and progress, world over, he added. Prime Minister Gilani said the 1974 Conference recognized President Yasser Arafat leadership role in promoting the just cause of the Palestinian people. President Arafat is not amongst us today, he said, adding, President Arafat was, as Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed had said, the symbol of Palestinian identity, nationhood and its struggle for a separate homeland for the Palestinian people.

Pakistani Art Scene Thrives With Emerging New Talent

Art in Pakistan continues to inspire and produce more new and aspiring artists, despite the country facing tough times. The main centres of new art in Pakistan are its two largest cities, Karachi and Lahore. Karachi, on the Arabian Sea, is the country’s financial and media capital, brash and cosmopolitan (and violent). Across the country, Lahore, despite its 10 million people, feels relatively sedate. A hub of South Asian artistic and intellectual life for centuries, it is still widely seen as the cultural center of Pakistan. It is home to the country’s leading art school, the National College of Arts. Karachi is also home to the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, an upstart institution founded in 1989, after the death of the military dictator Zia ul-Haq; the school’s creation signaled the end of a dark era when art galleries hid works with any content critical of the state. A Karachi artist represented in the Asia Society show, Naiza Khan, works in an unusual, somewhat oblique feminist vein out of a light-filled studio on the top floor of the family home in the upper-middle-class Defense Housing Authority neighborhood. Radical art is being made in Lahore, too. Anwar Saeed, a professor at the National College of Arts, works in a very different studio atmosphere from Ms. Khan’s: a small, excruciatingly spare room on the third floor of a walkup in the city’s old town. Some of her pieces, like the armored skirt, are a takeoff on the chastity belt. “Spine” was based on a backless bustier made in fuchsia silk and gold embroidery, an heirloom of a friend. Ms. Khan found the scarlet suede that covers it under a pile of leather scraps at a Karachi factory that manufactures bulletproof vests.

KARACHI: The irregularities being witnessed in the Sindh Education Department came under scathing attack at the provincial assembly session on Friday. While Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq said that he was also against the illegal appointments of officials in education department, but regretted that things were being done covertly at the top bureaucratic level. The session began late by two to three hours with Speaker Nisar Ali Khuhro in the chair. The speaker was annoyed at the members of provincial assembly for arriving late in the session. He said: "According to the rule of business, the session ends at 12:00 noon on Friday, shall I adjourn it now? On this Law Minister Ayaz Soomro apologized and assured the speaker to abide by the time schedule next time. During the question-answer session, the lawmakers strictly criticized the provincial minister Pir Mahar-ul-Haq and education department for serious irregularities. Jam Tamachi urged the minister to remove the officers hired against the policy of good governance. Responding on this, Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq proposed the formation of a joint committee to investigate the charges. Haq said that he was an unpopular minister because of his opposition in the illegal appointment of officers.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday assured Palestinian people its unequivocal and unreserved support to their just cause for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State of their own with Al-Quds as its capital. "Pakistan believes that peace will remain elusive in the Middle East unless the Palestinian problem is resolved" President Asif Ali Zardari told his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, who is on a day-long visit to Islamabad. The President said Pakistan favors an early settlement of the Palestinian - Israeli conflict on the basis of two-state solution. The president while condemning the brutal Israeli invasion of Gaza and its continued blockade said that Pakistan strongly oppose the construction of Jewish settlements in the Palestinian lands.
